A contrasting strip round the edge of a room turns a plain plank floor into something that looks made for the space. Here a pale strip runs a fixed distance off every wall and follows each corner, alcove and fireplace.
That kind of detail takes careful setting out. Every change of direction is marked before cutting, and the strip is kept an even width all round, including the curve at the foot of the stairs.
The base is prepared and smoothed first, because a narrow strip shows any unevenness straight away.
